Understanding the 4Cs is one of the best places to start when choosing a diamond. Developed as a universal way to evaluate diamond quality, the 4Cs, cut, colour, clarity and carat, help describe a diamond’s appearance and characteristics.

01 | CUT
The Sparkle factor
Cut describes how well a diamond’s proportions, symmetry and polish allow it to interact with light.
A beautifully cut diamond reflects light back through the top of the stone, creating the brilliance and sparkle we associate with diamonds.
Why it matters:
Cut can have one of the greatest impacts on how beautiful and lively a diamond appears.
Our advice
Prioritize a beautiful cut before simply choosing the largest diamond available within your budget.
*GOOD TO KNOW
For round brilliant diamonds, laboratories provide an overall cut grade. Fancy shapes such as oval, emerald, radiant, pear and marquise diamonds are evaluated differently and generally do not receive the same overall cut grade.
02 | COLOUR
How white is your diamond?
Diamond colour refers to the presence or absence of noticeable body colour within a diamond.
Diamonds are commonly graded from:
D TO F
Colourless
G TO J
Near Colourless
K TO M
Faint Colour
The closer a diamond is to D, the less noticeable colour it typically displays.
Do you need a D-colour diamond?
Not necessarily.
Many near-colourless diamonds can appear beautifully white once set, allowing you to allocate more of your budget toward characteristics that may be more noticeable to you, such as size or cut.
Your setting metal, diamond shape and personal preference can also influence which colour grade is right for you.
03 | CLARITY
Beauty is in the details
Clarity evaluates the natural characteristics found within and on the surface of a diamond.
These characteristics are commonly called inclusions and blemishes.
The clarity scale ranges from:
FL / IF
Flawless / Internally Flawless
VVS1 / VVS2
Very, Very Slightly Included
VS1 / VS2
Very Slightly Included
SI1 / SI2
Slightly Included
I1 / I2 / I3

Our advice
A higher clarity grade doesn't automatically mean a more beautiful diamond.
Instead, we often look for diamonds that are eye-clean, meaning inclusions aren't readily visible to the naked eye under normal viewing conditions.
This can give you a beautiful-looking diamond without paying for microscopic differences you may never see.
04 | CARAT
Size, but not exactly
Carat is a measurement of a diamond's weight, not its physical dimensions.
1 carat = 0.20 grams
Two diamonds with the same carat weight can look noticeably different in size depending on their shape, proportions and how their weight is distributed.
For example, certain elongated shapes may appear larger from the top than another diamond of the same carat weight.
DON'T SHOP BY CARAT ALONE
When comparing diamonds, look at both:
CARAT WEIGHT + DIMENSIONS
The millimeter measurements can give you a better idea of how large the diamond will actually appear on the finger.
Which of the 4cs matters most?
There isn't one perfect formula for everyone.
For many buyers, we recommend prioritizing:
1. CUT & OVERALL BEAUTY
How lively and visually appealing is the diamond?
2. COLOUR
Does the diamond appear as white as you'd like?
3. CLARITY
Is it eye-clean?
4. CARAT + DIMENSIONS
Does it give you the size and proportion you want?
The goal isn't necessarily to find the highest grades on paper.
It's to find the diamond that looks exceptional in real life.
The 4Cs & lab-grown diamonds
Lab-grown diamonds are evaluated using the same fundamental quality characteristics as mined diamonds: cut, colour, clarity and carat weight.
They have the same crystal structure and essentially the same physical and optical properties as mined diamonds. The primary difference is their origin. Lab-grown diamonds are created in controlled environments rather than formed underground.

Beyond the 4cs
THE CERTIFICATE DOESN'T TELL THE WHOLE STORY.
The 4Cs are an excellent starting point, but numbers and grades don't capture everything about how a diamond actually looks.
We also consider characteristics such as:
Proportions · Measurements · Ratio · Symmetry · Polish · Fluorescence · Inclusion Location · Overall Visual Appearance
With fancy shapes, we also pay particular attention to the individual personality of the stone because two diamonds with very similar certificates can still look quite different.
